Gr.3-Word Wheels

Learning adjectives can be fun for your students!

When we learned about adjectives in my third grade class I brought several silly pairs of sunglasses to school and I put them on one at a time. Then I had the kids tell me things about the sunglasses. They come up with all kinds of words-funny, big, silly, small, colorful, etc. We talked about how these words describe the sunglasses. Then I had them make or draw their own pair of sunglasses and they had to use describing words to write about their sunglasses.

As we brainstormed descriptive words for our sunglasses
I came up with the idea of creating:

"Oliver Word Wheels"
We hung the reference wheels in our classroom for students to use in their writing.
They loved coming up to the wheels and worked super hard on expanding their basic sentences
into super sentences for the rest of the year.

Students chose common and over-used words to be placed in the middle of the wheels.
We worked as a group to create our new "juicy" words to complete the wheels.
